Spring 2012 Volunteer Opportunities

YOUTH PROGRAM NEEDS:

*     Youth Administrative Assistant
We are looking for a volunteer to come in once or twice a week to help with filing papers, writing check requests, creating invoices for youth programs, documenting and tracking expenses, and filing receipt requests.

Time Commitment: 2-4 hours a week. Skills Needed: computer, writing, clerical, able to follow directions, and detail oriented
Other: Provide own transportation

*     Youth Curriculum Development
Individuals or small groups are needed to develop and sustain the goals of our 3 youth programs. This will include gathering existing activists and resources, finding and developing new materials, and compiling lesson plans for a focused area.

Volunteers are needed in each of the following curriculum areas:
Permaculture, Youth Organizing, Agri-Business Management 101, Gardening, Video Production, Media Analysis, Latin Nutrition 101, Local Civics 101, Food Systems 101, Environmental Principles, Bomba, Agricultural History of Puerto Rico, History of Holyoke, and Native Algonquin history.

Time Commitment: 4-8 hours a week.  Skills Needed: All areas require computer and writing skills with other skills needed depending on topic area

Resources Needed: computer, word processing software, access to libraries

*     Event Coordinator

Coordinate guest lecturers for Community Lecture Series. We are looking to put together a series of community lectures for the springtime, specifically looking at the intersections of Puerto Rican history, Taino history/culture, and agriculture/land. Our youth have been extremely interested in learning about their history and lack of adequate access to learn about the history of Puerto Rico. We are seeking students to help coordinate this series. We will do the outreach to the community and film the lectures to post on our facebook/ website. Our goal is to have the presentations be bilingual as a way to bridge gaps in age, experience, and in the community.

Time Commitment: 2-4 hours a week

Experience Needed: organizing skills, media experience a plus, and interest in Latin American studies or Puerto Rican history
Skills Needed: computer, writing, Spanish, agriculture, environmental knowledge, and public relations

ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT PROGRAM NEEDS

*     Community Development Research Assistant
We are looking for volunteers to research economic models on the following topics:
•Horse Barn Businesses
•Farm Stores
•Greenhouse Business Models

Volunteers will compile information on topics which will include photos, pricing, description of business and assets, and population served.

Time Commitment: 4-8 hours a week. Skills Needed: computer, writing, business knowledge, environmental knowledge, strong
research skills
Other: ability to visit potential business models

FARM PROGRAM NEEDS

*     Graphic Design/Marketing Assistant
We are looking for a volunteer to help with creating signs and marketing materials for the farm and farmers market.

Time Commitment: 2-4 hours a week for a semester + Skills Needed: visual design, computer, work with others, social media, marketing/promotion tools
