Nuestras Raíces Farm

La Finca

La Finca (The Farm) was born out of a participatory community planning process in which many of our community gardeners expressed a desire to grow food not just for themselves, but to grow for a market and begin an agricultural business. We worked together to find a suitable piece of land in urban Holyoke, and the project has grown into a beginning farmer project, a beautiful space for community celebration, and many small business opportunities.

La Finca houses a beginning farmer training program. We rent small plots of land (1/4 acre – full acre) to interested community members and provide them with small loans, training, shared resources, and market assistance, and community support. With our shared resources and support the beginning farmers build the necessary capital, knowledge, and connections to soon graduate from our incubation site onto their own farm.

La Finca is also available as a community gathering space to celebrate the vibrant Latino culture of Holyoke. Many community members come to our farm and say, “it looks just like Puerto Rico!” We hold several cultural celebrations throughout the summer, and provide a refreshing solace from bustling urban Holyoke year round.

Finally, La Finca is also a site for growing small businesses. We currently host four agricultural and food-based businesses including our farm store, pig roasting operation, greenhouse, and Paso Fino horse barn. Our on-farm businesses work together to provide services to the community and make La Finca an attractive family destination in the city of Holyoke.
